Privacy Policy

Effective: August 14, 2026

1. Overview

Find Nuclei Viewer is designed with privacy first. No account is required, no personal information is collected, and your image data never leaves your browser.

2. Analytics We Collect

We count page visits so we know which parts of the site and documentation are worth the effort. We are moving from a third-party service to our own, so both are described here. Neither uses cookies, and neither can identify you.

Find Nuclei analytics (ours)

Software we wrote, running on our own infrastructure in the European Union. No third-party analytics service and no advertising network is involved.

It records:

  • Which page you opened, and when
  • The site that linked to you, reduced to a bare hostname
  • Rough location: country, region, and city, worked out from your IP address
  • The network operator providing your connection
  • Browser, operating system, device type, and the main language your browser asks for

Your IP address is never stored. It is used once, mixed with a secret we throw away and replace every day, to produce a number that tells repeat visits apart within a single day. Because that secret is destroyed, we cannot connect your visits across different days, and we cannot connect a visit here to a visit on our main website.

No cookies and no browser storage of any kind are used for this. If your browser sends Do Not Track or Global Privacy Control, we record nothing at all.

Plausible Analytics (being retired)

Plausible Analytics is a privacy-friendly analytics service hosted in the EU. It does not use cookies and does not collect personal data. We are replacing it with our own system above, and this section will be removed once that is complete.

Plausible collects:

  • Page views (which pages are visited)
  • Referrer (how you found us)
  • Browser and operating system type
  • Country (derived from anonymized IP; IP is not stored)
  • Screen size category (mobile/tablet/desktop)

Plausible does not collect:

  • IP addresses
  • Personal identifiers
  • Cross-site tracking data
  • Any information about the images you view

Neither system records anything about your images. Not filenames, not URLs, not dimensions, not pixel data. See section 4.

3. Data Stored in Your Browser

The viewer stores data locally in your browser to provide a smooth experience. This data never leaves your device.

Storage What Purpose
IndexedDB Image metadata, thumbnails, viewer settings, annotations Remember recently opened images and restore your last view
localStorage UI preferences (e.g., welcome modal dismissed, storage notice) Remember small UI choices across sessions
File System Access API Directory handle references (Chrome/Edge only) Re-open local ZARR folders without re-selecting them
Cache Storage The viewer's own program files. Never image data, which is never cached by design. Let the viewer start and run with no network connection

4. Your Image Data

Your microscopy data is processed entirely in your browser using WebGPU/WebGL. Image files are never uploaded to any server. When loading from a URL, your browser fetches data directly from that URL. Find Nuclei does not proxy or store any of it.

5. Cookies

We do not use cookies. Both analytics systems described in section 2 are cookieless by design, and ours uses no browser storage at all. No third-party cookies are set by this site.

6. Third-Party Services

Our own analytics is not a third party. It runs on infrastructure we control, in the European Union, and the data goes nowhere else.

The only third-party service we use is:

  • Plausible Analytics: privacy-friendly, GDPR-compliant web analytics hosted in the EU. No personal data is collected or shared. Being retired, see section 2. Learn more about Plausible's privacy practices.

7. Your Rights

Since all viewer data is stored locally in your browser, you have full control:

  • Delete all data: Use the "Clear All Data" button on the landing page, or clear your browser's site data for this domain
  • Opt out of analytics: Use a browser extension like uBlock Origin or Plausible's exclusion guide
  • Export your data: Annotations and settings can be exported from the viewer interface

8. Children

Find Nuclei Viewer is a scientific tool not directed at children under 13. We do not knowingly collect information from children.

9. Changes to This Policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. Changes will be posted on this page with an updated effective date.
